Jesus Calms the Storm

I am singing a song at church on Sunday called Sometimes It Takes A Storm and was inspired by my Pastor to know what it meant. To be able to walk the sermon brought forth in the words of the song. Not only did God teach me what it meant in the weeks that I have prepared and learned the song, but He taught me so much in researching what the Word says. Thank you, Pastor Bill, for challenging me.

Mark 4: 35-41
35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 41And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

Here we have a first hand account from Mark telling of this day. A day when the faith of the disciples was tested and questioned. A day when Jesus showed the power of the Father. But its not just Mark’s story, they were all there and two more of them spoke of this exact incident in their testimonies in the Word. (Matthew 8:23-27 & Luke 8:22-25)

I feel so sorry for Christians who enter Christianity believing that this new life will be pain free and easy. God never promises that to us when He tells us what awaits us when we sacrifice our lives for the one He means for us. The only things He promises is that “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (II Cor. 5:17). The new creature is not devoid of hard times or struggles, he or she just has a new way of dealing with it, should they choose to do so.

The Word tells us in Psalm 46 that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.” (Ps. 46:1-3). It gives us a pure and simple way to make it through…a solid foundation in Him.

He tells us in Matthew 7: 24-27 “24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”

If we build our lives up on the solid foundation that is Christ Jesus, then we can weather any storm. No matter how strong, how devastating, we will fall not, for we are founded on a ROCK!

He is our shelter, our “refuge” and our strength. No matter how gray the skies our how rough the waters, we will see through to the sunshine if we stand fast in our faith and seek shelter in Him.

In my life, I have weathered many storms…divorce, my small children moving over 1,000 miles away, losing 2 grandmothers in one month, drug addiction, and more; but I have made it through and live today to tell you about it. Some have asked me in times of trouble, “How are you dealing with this?” My only answer to that is, “The only way I know how, by faith.” I must seek shelter in Jesus and trust that He and I will make it through together. My life is not devoid of rough weather, but praise God that I don’t sail this sea alone!

If I can pray for you today, please do not hesitate to let me know!

Entertaining Angels

I have been drawn to figure out my own personal interpretation of the meaning of the Newsboys’ song Entertaining Angels because a friend of mine asked me what it meant.

Before I began I went to the Word and found the only mention I could find of entertaining angels in Hebrews 11:2 “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

In studying out this verse I have learned that entertaining strangers comes from the Greek “philonexia,” which is simply hospitality. Then in the next sentence, entertained is from the Greek “xenizo,” which is to be a host; and the word angels is from the Greek “aggelos,” which is translated as “messenger” throughout scripture.

I find that the verse is more talking about our hospitality to strangers, friends, and messengers of God than actual angels. Especially if you continue to the next verse when it speaks of them that are in bonds and asks us to remember them. I think in this text we are simply being called once again to be Christ-like and treat others with love and compassion.

So with this study having been done, my interpretation of the Newsboys’ song is pretty simple.

He is speaking to his friend, his closest friend, Jesus. He has walked away from Him and is feeling the distance. He calls out to Him and asks Him if He’s still there and will He take Him back?

Entertaining angels in the chorus speaks maybe of the people whom God has sent to be around him, friends and family who know and fear the Lord. People who are sitting with him daily, watching TV with him, loving him back to the place where he falls on his knees and cries out to the Lord.

In the second verse, he is again speaking to his friend, his Jesus. He is remembering those lessons He has taught him and finally, he is silent, waiting to hear the silent breath of God as He breathes His love over him.

The chorus is the same after this but he seems to be beckoning those “angels” or messengers God has sent to his life to continue singing over him, to continue provoking him to return to the Lord.

Maybe I’m way off, maybe I have lost the point completely; however, this is how this song has spoken to me. Perhaps this song is left to be so vague so that it can speak to each individual in their specific situation.

Whatever your situation, I pray that you will keep in mind that we know not when we might be face to face with a messenger of God, be it a family member, a friend or an actual angel.

If I can pray for you today, let me know.

I have posted the lyrics to the song below, if you want to read them:

One to another, do You remember me
I feel so small; Are You listening tonight
So temporary, the things that I have seen
I ran so far,Will you take me back again?

Entertaining Angels
By the light of my TV screen
24/7, You wait for me
Entertaining Angels
By the time I fall to my knees
Host of Heaven, sing over me

One to another, the feelings in between
I won't let go of all you taught me, alright
Close as a brother, the way we used to be
I hold my breath and I wait for You to breathe.

Entertaining Angels
By the light of my TV screen
24/7, You wait for me.
Entertaining Angels
While the night becomes history
Host of Heaven, sing over me.

Entertaining Angels
By the light of my TV screen
24/7, You wait for me.
Entertaining Angels
By the time I fall to my knees
Host of Heaven, sing over me

Entertaining Angels
By the light of my TV screen
24/7, You wait for me.
Entertaining Angels
WHILE THE NIGHT BECOMES HISTORY
Host of Heaven, sing over me.

Entertaining Angels
By the light of my TV screen
24/7, You wait for me.
Entertaining Angels
By the time I fall to my knees
Host of Heaven, sing over me.

God is our Strength

I pray this morning finds each of you blessed! My focus this last year has been on Proverbs 31. The chapter that talks about how God sees us as women. My goal is to strive every day to allow Jesus to grow me into that Proverbs 31 woman. I want more than anything to be the one who people say "She fears the Lord" I want to be the one that brings people closer to God just by the way I live my life. St. Francis of Assisi once said "Preach the gospel at all times and when necessary, use words." I want my life to show my love for the Lord.

As I began to work on this website for Christian women to come together to lose weight and grow in the Lord and "restore the temple" that is our body, I meditated on Proverbs 31:17 "She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms." That Godly, that Virtuous woman does NOT lie down and cry "Oh, my goodness, what a horrible life this is, I just don't know I will make it through." She girdeth her loins with STRENGTH! Psalm 73:26 says "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."

Whether it be weight loss, depression, school, work or simply the trials of every day life, cling to that which gives you strength and you will make it through.

Remember Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Please let me know how I can pray for you today!
