Serving or Preserving??

But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mark 10:42-45

Why do you do the things you do? Do you do things to minister to those around you, or do you do them because you have to? Hebrews talks about the "attitudes of our heart" and I guess I just missed it. I found out that many of us do things with the wrong "Heart attitude" and because of this we miss out on Joy.

Do you get up earlier than your family and fix them breakfast because you have to or because you truly want to serve them? Do you show up at your small group on Wednesday night in the cold and the ice because you enjoy fellowship with your Christian brothers and sisters, or because you are expected to be there?

If you find that you are unhappy in your life, marriage, relationship, job or whatever it is and you know you used to be happy in it...do you wonder why? Do you ask, "I used to enjoy this so very much, why do I not even want anything to do with it now?" Maybe your husband, boyfriend, kids, girlfriend, friends, boss, or situation hasn't changed...maybe your heart attitude has.

Let me give you an example. Take my friend, Karen, for example. Karen loves her husband with her whole heart but lately she has been depressed. She has a nice home, beautiful children, friends who love her, and she has no debt. Why in the world would she be unhappy. She feels like she's running herself ragged doing the things she used to enjoy doing. She used to keep her home so very well that her husband called her super-wife. He bragged about her to his friends, he praised her. Has he changed? No. Who has? She has. When they first married and she was super-wife, she was living to serve him. She was serving him at home, she was serving at the church, she lived to minister to anyone who she came in contact with.

Then she got tired, she got complacent and she allowed her heart attitude to change. She was teaching Sunday School because she had to. She swept the floor because she had to, or maybe she didn't do it at all. She was sad and angry and stressed. She felt as though she had too few hours in the day to do it all. Now how can that be? She used to do more. Have the days gotten shorter? What can she do to get her joy back?

She sought God and His heart and He gave her the same message I am bringing to you today. Are you serving or preserving? Are you living your life to serve others or are you doing what you have to do in order to preserve the way of life that you have come to know? For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. I don't want to preserve any longer. I want to go back to serving. I want to get my joy back. Will you join me?
